Disco glitter at Depo

Peeling perfection at Cabinessence

 Industrial chic at Cup Roastery

While I usually stick to a pretty rigid coffee routine - in the UK you couldn't prise me from the wooden benches at Climpson & Sons and I'm pretty partial to the Scout brand of service - this week I forced myself to get out and about with my daily cup of joe. And I've got to say, Brisbane, I thought I'd found myself back in Berlin. Ramshackle charm, sleek minimalism, over the top fabulous: there are some stunning spots where the venue was as appealing as the menu.

At Depo in West End you'll find a multitude of clashing design schemes that all add up to fabulous.  There's a disco glitter wall behind the bar, chalet-chic shearling seating, vintage leather chairs that you sink into, all in a cavernous warehouse. I love it! Depo has only been open a short while and is already curating some really interesting food events. Last week they held the launch for Melbourne food journal Scrag End which definitely caught my attention.

If Depo is somewhere to enjoy the bold, Cabinessence in Paddington is the ideal incognito hideaway. With only the tiniest of signs out the front, you could easily pass by the mismatched pots of jade and the charming lopsided awnings and not realise it's actually a cafe serving quality BlackStar coffee. And it seems it's designed that way. There is no website, facebook or phone number to call, so you can only discover it by walking past or via a tip off from someone in the know.

Cup Roastery in Woollongabba seriously know their coffee. Owner Josh Russell runs Saturday morning cupping classes for those dedicated to the best caffeine drop. But it's also the perfect venue if you like an industrial aesthetic. There's concrete floors, slate accents, blond wood and industrial light fittings in a huge warehouse on Balaclava Street. While many people buy Cup Coffee roasts online, the interiors are so beautiful that I love coming in store.
